EDHV
As a student at Design Academy Eindhoven, Remco van de Craats was already interested in how to better showcase the creative industries and talents of Eindhoven and the surrounding area. His graduation project, Etropolis, was a system for helping like-minded designers connect in order to collaborate. Since founding design firm Edhv in 2005 with publisher Dan Melis he has gone on to cover everything from graphic design, exhibition design, to industrial design with projects like the Debug Chair (2010). The firm recently launched Lead magazine, dedicated to further showcasing the talents of Eindhoven.

Eva de Klerk
Eva de Klerk is deeply excited by projects that initially appear unsuitable for development and where the direction is not clear. She was a key figure in the re-development of the NDSM Shipyard project in northern Amsterdam where she initiated the plan to purchase the 86,000 square meter warehouse. Now a bustling hub for artists, creatives and youth the development is an important cultural aspect of the once derelict site. In 2008 she co-founded Open Innovation Capital with a focus on Open Source Creative City Development. She lectures nationally and internationally on methods for creating similar co-operative developments in other locales and still keeps a watchful eye on the developments along the river IJ in Amsterdam from her office in NDSM.

Gijs Bakker
Originally trained as a jewellery and industrial designer at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, Gijs Bakker rose to fame after the founding of Droog Design in 1993 with Renny Ramakers. The pair brought Dutch design to the world, exhibiting the work of young designers at influential shows like the Salone de Mobile. With over 40 years of experience as an educator he has arguably had one of the greatest influences in Dutch design and there are few prominent Dutch designers today who would not cite him as an influence in at least some way. In 2009 he left Droog Design and has since continued his own practice, lecturing, and investigating the relationship between craft and design in the Netherlands and now in Taiwan with the ‘Yii’ project (2009). In ‘Yii’ he seeks to establish a stronger coherence between local Taiwanese craft and contemporary design in Taiwan.

Petra Blaisse
Inside Outside was founded in 1991 by Petra Blaisse. From 1987 onwards she had been designing installations for architectural work that challenged the viewer and the space. Her shift to the use of textiles, light and finishes in interior space and to a broader understanding of gardens and landscapes culminated in the founding of the studio which today works between textile, landscape, and exhibition design through a combination of multiple disciplines. Far from being merely interior design in its most limited application, the work of Inside Outside bridges between the space of the architect and industrial designer while also delving into master plans like the West Kowloon Cultural District in Hong Kong with OMA.

What is dutchDesign?
DutchDesign is an undergraduate field school and research program offered by the School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT) at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. This website is the legacy project of the bi-annual research results conducted in the area of design and innovation in the Netherlands, under the directorship of Russell Taylor, Senior Lecturer in Design, SIAT. DutchDesign is part of a larger research project that has been studying the same phenomena in Italy with the ItaliaDesign Field School program since 2004. The most significant contribution to the field are the interviews conducted in the Netherlands with leading designers, thinkers, architects and design manufacturers. Each year, the new team builds on the previous year’s research. DutchDesign is an open source network that values above all knowledge-share on a global scale.
