Bas van Beek

One of the harshest critics of contemporary design that still works in the field Bas van Beek works in the space between critical design and industrial design. He prefers the mass-production technique of companies like IKEA to the creation of costly limited editions. One of his projects, ’50% Discount’, consists of works by other designers like Richard Hutten that have been cut in half and are sold at half price for half the design. His designs are often highly controversial, with projects like the ‘Rip-Offs’ ceramic series consisting of recreations of expensive vases produced by other designers and artists. This act of plagiarism and much of the hypocrisy that surrounds his work is representative of what he sees as one of the problems of design today.
