Research: De Eilanden

After the completion of the Amsterdam Centraal Station near the end of the 19th century increasing trade and travel demands led to the construction of deep water harbours and warehouses were established in the area. The KNSM and Java islands were created as break-waters for the harbour but were left deserted by the 1980s. In 1996 Amsterdam commissioned architectural firm West 8 to convert the Borneo and Sporenburg docks into 2,500 unit residential areas. The mix of semi-public space and architecture by Steven Holl, MVRDV, OMA, Mateo, and others has led to a unique set of neighborhoods just outside the of the city’s center.
