Research: Dutch Painters: Vermeer

Like Rembrandt and Hals, Johannes Vermeer was a Baroque artist during the Dutch Golden Age (see: Frans Hals research for info on Baroque/Dutch Golden Age). Living in Delft, Vermeer painted the city’s residents, wealthy and poor. Vermeer’s fame is unique in that he died as a relatively unknown artist, and was later rediscovered in the 19th century. Well-known painting like “The Milkmaid” and “The Girl with the Pearl Earring” show up Vermeer’s distinctive use of light and colour.
