Research: Royal Tichelaar Makkum

Royal Tichelaar Makkum is the oldest company in the Netherlands, with historical evidence showing that its inception dates back to at least 1594. It began as a brick building company but the decline of the brick industry in 1670 caused it to shift to domestic pottery. By the 1920s the company had stopped developing new products and by the 1980s there were a high number of imitations of Royal Tichelaar Makkum products. Today the company has reinvented itself under management by Jan Tichelaar and through collaborations with designers and architects like Jurgen Bey, Studio Job, and MVRDV.
